Pride

Seven years ago I took my son to his first Pride Parade. It was my first in a LONG time so we were both a bit nervous. A core memory was created for both of us that day.
This year we were together again, but not as spectators. We walked together for Free Mom Hugs giving hugs throughout the parade route. Watching my son, his boyfriend, my daughter, their friends give hugs and spread love created another core memory. The sheer joy and emotion of the day is something that I will never forget. My son has gone from an unsure young boy to a confident gay man in the blink of an eye. It has not always been an easy journey for either one of us. Along the way he has shown me what fearlessness looks like, as well as grace and tough love when needed. And, most importantly, he has taught me what it means to be an LQBTQIA+ parent and active ally. He is my superhero. Being an ally is not always fun, nor is it easy, however, he has helped me to understand that it is so worth it!
Representing Free Mom Hugs in the Pride Parade is an opportunity to give hugs to those who need them most. It is an opportunity to bear witness to those who need love and acceptance as they may not experience those things at home. So for over 3 miles, Free Mom Hugs walked into the outstretched arms of those who needed a mom/dad/brother/sister/ally hug. We listened as people told us their story. We hugged as people cried. We loved as people shared. We affirmed as people needed support.
I am always amazed at the sheer number of people who do not feel affirmed for who they are and how they love. It is why I continue to be an ally and a safe space at home, at school and in the world.
That journey all started long ago….with a boy and a cape. My superhero.
Peace.

Love

Self-love.
What would you do if someone else treated you the way you treat yourself? How would you react if someone criticized you the way you criticize yourself? How would it be if someone forced you into the same self-defeating behavior that you choose to do on your own? What if someone else prevented you from enjoying life as much as you deny enjoyment to yourself? You would, no doubt, be outraged. If you would never let someone else treat you that way, why do you allow yourself to do so? You have control over your own actions, your own thoughts, your own feelings. Stop defeating yourself. Allow yourself to live, permit yourself to succeed, let yourself enjoy life. Be good to yourself. You deserve it.

Powerful

Powerful.
You have the power to surprise someone with a sincere act of kindness that’s totally unexpected and completely delightful. You have the power to give a helping hand and an encouraging word to those who need it most. You have the power to take an ordinary moment and give it extraordinary value. You have the power to forgive. You have the power to appreciate. You have the power to express yourself and you have the power to listen. You have the power to teach and you have the power to learn. At the end of this day, your world will not be the same place that it was when the day began. For you have the power to make a positive difference. Be powerful today and everyday.
Peace

Kindness

Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day.
You don’t ever need an excuse to be kind but today make an extra effort towards kindness.
Choose peace over conflict.
Choose love over hate.
Choose kindness over cruelty.
Today make a conscience choice to do a random act of kindness.
No matter how small, it will make a difference.
This a priceless gift.
Peace

everyone

Valentine’s Day is for everyone.
Hearts, flowers, candy, balloons…..all of that is what businesses and advertisers what you to believe is at the core of Valentine’s Day.
Today people will post photos all over social media with testaments of love to a partner. Photos of dinners and dates and all sorts of demonstrations of ‘love’. But at what cost? What happens on the other days of the year?
Valentine’s Day is a day that is painful for some for so many reasons. It is a day that is filled with sadness for some people. It is a day that can be lonely for others. It is a day some loathe and some dread.
Valentine’s Day is one day. Just one. It is a day on a calendar that we celebrate love. And it is a day for everyone. Everyone’s feelings need to be honored and everyone deserves to be loved.
So today, feel all of your feelings. Love yourself and love others.
You are important.
You matter.
You are all loved.
